Sheet pan Lebanese shish tawook chicken.

Hands down, Lebanese Shish Tawook Chicken is probably one of my favorite weeknight dinner recipes. Served with a lentil side salad or a warm bowl of turkish red lentil soup, it’s a weekly staple for us! While it’s frequently made on skewers, I decided to make this 5-ingredient recipe even easier by baking it in the oven on a sheet pan. Flavored with plenty of bright lemon juice, fresh garlic, and extra virgin olive oil, the chicken bakes in the oven while my hands are free to do other important things!

Ingredients

  • Chicken breasts: A lean source of protein that is easily accessible and affordable.
  • Lemon juice: Acidic, bright flavor that makes the chicken nice and tender.
  • Olive oil: Helps to coat and marinate the chicken.
  • Garlic: Pungent, aromatic, flavor to season the chicken.
  • Salt & pepper: Enhances the natural flavors of the other ingredients.

How to Make Sheet Pan Lebanese Shish Tawook Chicken

Step 1. Start your shish tawook chicken by taking your chicken breasts and patting them dry, then cutting them into small chunks.

Step 2. Then take a large bowl and use a microplane to grate in your garlic cloves.

Step 3. Then whisk in the lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Many recipes also use plain yogurt in the marinade, so feel free to try that as well!

Step 4. Toss the chicken in the marinade, and make sure everything is evenly coated. Let marinate for at least 30 minutes, then pour onto a prepared baking sheet.

Step 5. Spread the chicken evenly on the sheet pan, then bake in the oven at 350 for about 20 minutes.

Step 6. While chicken is baking, chop up fresh herbs like parsley or basil.

Once chicken is golden brown and cooked through, garnish with fresh parsley, and enjoy your Sheet Pan Lebanese Shish Tawook Chicken!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between tawook and shawarma?

Other than that they are usually cooked using different methods, the simple ingredients and lemon juice give the tawook a light flavor. Alternatively, shawarma has a much richer and deeper flavor, as it usually uses more spices like cinnamon, allspice, and paprika.

Why is it called shish tawook?

Since it is traditionally cooked on a skewer or kebab, the name comes from Turkish for “skewered chicken.” Despite the Turkish name, renditions of the recipe are enjoyed all throughout Middle Eastern cuisine.

What do I serve with shish tawook chicken?

I love to serve shish tawook over a salad, or in a pita bread sandwich with hummus.

Delicious – and I appreciate that these is a “simpler” version of the original Lebanese recipe! It made today’s Sunday meal so easy – not to mention so healthy. I used garlic-infused olive oil because I love garlic, and store-bought raw chicken tenders because to reduce the meal-prep time, and the chicken turned out delicious!!! So flavorful. Thank you so much for all of your easy, quick, healthy recipes!!

I’m so glad you enjoyed! And using chicken tenders to make it even simpler is a great idea!

Are you joking? This is not Lebanese shish tawook. This is unseasoned, baked chicken. Shish tawook is marinated in yogurt, lemon juice, and spices for many hours or even overnight. This just has lemon juice, a small amount of garlic, salt, and pepper. Any Lebanese person reading this has got to be so offended. I can’t even believe this is real.

Hi Malini! I’m actually Lebanese, and have an authentic Shish Tawook recipe on my site as well if you’d like to try that! I explain in this post that I altered the traditional recipe to be made on a sheet pan so that it’s quick and easier for people who don’t have as much time.

Can you do a yogurt marinade for an oven recipe? I just don’t own a grill, and I’m guessing pan frying on my electric stovetop wouldn’t be good substitute.

Made a batch using chicken thighs. Super easy. Had some with my cauli fried rice for dinner tonight. Will have some with my salad tomorrow.

It’s fresh parsley that I sprinkled on AFTER cooking it. :)
