What are the ingredients in rocky road?

Marshmallow, chocolate and peanuts are common ingredients for a traditional rocky road recipe. Some recipes also include coconut, glace cherries or other dried fruit and nuts. There’s a lot of variation even among classic versions of the treat, which makes it very versatile.

How long does homemade rocky road keep?

You can typically store homemade rocky road for up to a week in a sealed container in the fridge. This might vary depending on the recipe and what ingredients are in your rocky road too. But considering how delicious it is, you might not have to worry about it lasting that long.

Is rocky road an Australian thing?

Like many foods, the origins of rocky road are unclear. There is one theory that it was invented in Australia in the late 1800s as a way to use chocolate, nuts and other supplies that were damaged in transit from England. But there’s also another theory it’s an American invention.

According to Australian author Jan O’Connell’s website Australian Food Timeline, it’s likely it was invented in the US as the earliest references she found were in US newspapers from the 1920s. But she does note that “Rocky Roads” was advertised by Myer in Adelaide in 1933. It also became more popular with the creation of Darrell Lea’s Rocklea Road in 1955. So making your own is basically adding to the tradition.
