Is it a hot cross bun? Is it a biscuit? Well actually, it’s a bit of both!

We’re talking about the new Mint Slice hot cross buns, of course, inspired by the beloved Arnott’s biscuit.

Chocolate and mint is a classic combination, but does it work in a hot cross bun?

We asked The Weekly team to give these chocolate mint buns a go. Their answer? Yes, it does!

This iconic flavour pairing in a hot cross bun was “surprisingly good”, according to our food director Fran Abdallaoui. The buns are light, chocolatey, and don’t skimp on the mint.

What is the Mint Slice hot cross bun?

The bun has a chocolatey dough which is studded with chocolate chunks and peppermint flavoured fudge pieces to invoke the beloved Mint Slice. “Enjoy them warm and gooey or as a mint choc ice cream sandwich,” Coles says.

For our taste test, we gently warmed the buns in the oven, then chopped them into smaller pieces for the testers.

The taste test results

We asked the tasters to smell the buns before they took their first bite, and many picked out the mint with ease.

“I instantly know what this is!” one taster remarked with excitement. Another was particularly thrilled, saying “I love a mint and chocolate combo”.

In short, yes it did.

“Good”, “iconic” and “surprisingly good” said three of the tasters after eating. The fourth sang its praises with a “chocolate, minty, light” before going back for a second bite.

It’s the hot cross bun collab we didn’t see coming. Another fun Easter offering from Coles, which launched just this week, puts a savoury spin on a hot cross bun, inspired by the flavours of Doritos corn chips. This was a surprising hit in our office taste test. Read how we found it.
