It’s the hot cross bun collab we didn’t see coming. The new flavour from Coles, which launched just this week, puts a savoury spin on a hot cross bun, inspired by the flavours of …
… Doritos corn chips.
Plus a hint of jalapeno.
Yes, you read that correctly. Nachos in bun form. Complete with a cross on top. (It is a riff on a hot cross bun, of course!)
The verdict? It’s a little bit spicy, pleasantly cheesy, and was a surprise hit when we tasted it in the office. Our food director Fran Abdallaoui even called for a bowl of soup to dunk it in.
Here’s how we found it.

What are the Doritos hot cross buns?
Coles describes this bun as “a nacho-inspired fiesta”. In addition to the Doritos-inspired seasoning, these hot cross buns include jalapeno chilli for a spicy kick, cheese, plus tomato granules.
For our taste test, we gently warmed the buns in the oven, then chopped them into smaller pieces for the testers.

The taste test results
The first thing all four of our tasters noted was the savoury scent. You could smell it wafting from the warmed bun without having to lean close to it.
“No, really?” was one surprised reaction, followed by a “be brave” before they tasted. Already, the savoury hot cross bun was testing some ideas of what a hot cross bun should be.
Others could tell it was savoury from the look of it. “This might be cheesy,” one taster said, while another claimed it “looked savoury”.
Then came the actual tasting.

For some, it was an immediate positive reaction. “This is better than the sweet ones,” commented one taster. “This is one I can get around,” said another (who did confess they prefer savoury flavours to sweet ones in general).
“Cheesy and spicy,” summarised another taster, who then informed us, “I’m going to keep eating this one.”
Even our hot cross bun traditionalist Fran tasted a piece and was won over by the “surprising chilli hit”.
“I want to dunk it in some soup,” was her verdict.
