Pancake Day falls on Shrove Tuesday, which is the Tuesday before Lent begins. “Shrove” comes from the old word “shriven” or “shriving”, which means to confess and be forgiven for your sins.
Where do pancakes come into it? Traditionally, Lent involved giving up rich foods like butter, sugar and eggs, so Shrove Tuesday was the last day people could indulge in a treat like a fluffy pancake before Easter.
